Sự kiện đầu tiên: Trình chiếu chùm phim ngắn quốc tế thuộc ‘Animistic Apparatus’

“Sẽ ra sao nếu phim/điện ảnh không chỉ có mỗi con người là khán giả duy nhất và độc tôn?” Đó là câu hỏi trọng tâm của ‘Animistic Apparatus’, một dự án giám tuyển khởi động từ 2019, khám phá mối quan hệ giữa thực hành của các nghệ sĩ đương đại trong lĩnh vực phim & hình ảnh động với các thực hành tâm linh truyền thống (cụ thể là thuyết vật linh - animism).

‘Animistic Apparatus’ bắt nguồn từ nghiên cứu về hoạt động tâm linh ở Thái Lan và một số lãnh thổ lân cận, kể từ sau Chiến tranh lạnh, người dân nơi đây bắt đầu hình thành truyền thống chiếu phim lưu động ngoài trời như một nghi lễ với thế giới bên kia.

‘Animistic Apparatus’ đã được trình chiếu, dàn dựng tại ‘Berwick Film and Media Arts Festival’, và Yebisu International Festival for Art & Alternative Visions.

LULLABY (Khúc hát ru) - Pathompon Mont Tespratee

<2019 / 8 phút. / 16mm chuyển đổi kỹ thuật số, đen trắng>

Dựa trên nghiên cứu của Pathompon Mont Tesprateep ở vùng sâu phía nam Thái Lan, một khu vực biên giới Mã Lai-Hồi giáo từng bị chế độ chuyên chế Thái Lan sáp nhập trong thời kỳ thuộc địa. Pathompon hợp tác với một giáo viên Phật giáo người Thái đã nghỉ hưu. Có bốn phiên bản mới của các giai điệu hát ru được hát bằng tiếng Chehe, một phương ngữ của vùng biên giới nối liền Thái Lan và Malaysia này.

DRAMA (Kịch) - Riar Rizaldi Tellurian <2020 / 26 phút. / kỹ thuật số, màu>

Ngày 5 tháng 5 năm 1923, chính phủ Đông Ấn Hà Lan tổ chức lễ khai trương một đài phát thanh mới ở Tây Java có tên là Đài phát thanh Malabar. Tháng 3 năm 2020, chính quyền địa phương của Indonesia đã công bố kế hoạch tái khởi động đài phát thanh như một di tích lịch sử và địa điểm du lịch. Phim hình dung lại những gì đã xảy ra giữa hai mốc thời gian đó: vai trò quan trọng của núi trong lịch sử; tàn tích thuộc địa như bộ máy thúc đẩy công nghệ địa kỹ thuật; và sức mạnh vô hình của tổ tiên bản địa. Phần tường thuật dựa trên văn bản bị lãng quên của Tiến sĩ Munarwan - một nhà ‘giả nhân học’ tiếng tăm.

THE JUNGLE KNOWS YOU BETTER THAN YOU DO (Rừng biết nhiều về ta hơn ta nghĩ) - Juanita Onzaga <2017 / 20 phút. / kỹ thuật số, màu>

Colombia là vùng đất của những bóng ma. Có hai anh em lang thang trong những vùng đất huyền bí đó để tìm kiếm linh hồn của người cha đã khuất. Cuộc hành trình của họ đưa họ từ Bogota đến rừng rậm Colombia, xuyên qua các miền suy tưởng và chìm sâu vào những giấc mơ ám ảnh. Ở đây họ sẽ tìm thấy một số câu trả lời và bắt gặp người bạn đồng hành thú vị.

MOUNT SONG (Khúc ca của Núi) - Shambhavi Kaul <2013 / 8 phút. / kỹ thuật số, màu>

Shambhavi Kaul tập hợp những phân mảnh từ các phim Hồng Kông cũ, gợi lên những hoài niệm về thời xa xưa. “Trong thực hành của mình, tôi luôn nỗ lực kéo lại cho bằng được và soi tỏ bất cứ điều gì nằm bên dưới những nỗi nhớ/niềm hoài niệm kia, chính điều đó kích thích tôi, khiến tôi lo lắng, khấp khởi. Loại bỏ các diễn viên, chỉ tập trung vào bối cảnh và phông nền là một phương thức bóc tách tôi sử dụng để đè xuống những tự sự gốc, và lật tẩy những phát biểu vô tình, ngoài chủ đích. Quá trình này cũng tương tự như việc tái tạo lại một nơi chốn tưởng tượng.”

MARS IS THE WELL (Sao hoả nơi đáy giếng) - Trương Minh Quý & Freddy Nadolny Poustochkine < 2014 / 19 phút. / kỹ thuật số, màu>

Một câu chuyện ngụ ngôn hài hước của Trương Minh Quý và Freddy Nadolny Poustochkine lấy bối cảnh vào năm 2048. Việt Nam bấy giờ đã hoàn toàn chìm dưới nước và người Việt phải lên sao Hỏa. “Rõ ràng là tất cả những suy nghĩ về tương lai của chúng ta đều bắt nguồn từ thực tế của quá khứ và hiện tại.”

THE FIRST SCREENING (02 Mar): Experimental Short Films of Animistic Apparatus

Animistic Apparatus is a curatorial project exploring affinities between contemporary artists’ moving image and animistic practices, based on research by May Adadol Ingawanij, who has been investigating ritual uses of itinerant film projection around Thailand and neighbouring territories since the Cold War period.

“What if contemporary film screenings and installations were reimagined as if they were rituals offered and addressed to nonhuman beings? What if artists were precarious makers of offerings, rather than authors of work or producers of self-expression?” These are the provocative questions that sits at the centre of Animistic Apparatus, offering new interpretation about the “relationship between mediation, conceptions of life, and historical, cosmological and ecological imaginaries”.

Based on Pathompon Mont Tesprateep’s research in the deep south of Thailand, a Malay-Muslim majority border region historically annexed by the absolutist Thai regime during colonisation. Pathompon collaborates with a retired Buddhist-Thai teacher on four new renditions of lullaby tunes sung in Chehe, a dialect locally spoken in parts of this borderland connecting Thailand and Malaysia.

DRAMA - Riar Rizaldi Tellurian

May 5th, 1923, the Dutch East Indies government celebrated the opening of a new radio station in West Java called Radio Malabar. March 2020, the local Indonesian government announced plans to reactivate the station as a historical site and tourist attraction. Tellurian Drama imagines what would have happened in between those years: the vital role of mountain in history; colonial ruins as an apparatus for geoengineering technology; and the invisible power of indigenous ancestral. The narration is based on the forgotten text written by a prominent pseudo-anthropologist Drs. Munarwan.

Colombia is a land of ghosts. Two siblings roam these mystical landscapes in search of their dead father's spirit. Their journey takes them from Bogota to the Colombian jungle, through realms of thought and deep into their haunted dreams. Here they will find some answers and attract unexpected company.

Shambhavi Kaul assembles fragments of old Hong Kong films that nostalgically evoke ancient times. “In my work, the effort is to pull back and make apparent whatever lies underneath that nostalgia, what appears to me to be more like anxiety. Removing the actors and focusing on the sets and backdrops is a way to subdue the dominating narratives of the source material to find out what was being unintentionally stated. What happens through this process is also the reconstruction of an imagined place.” Shambhavi Kaul interviewed by Nandita Raman, The International Centre of Photography.

MARS IS THE WELL - Trương Minh Quý & Freddy Nadolny Poustochkine

Truong Minh Quý and Freddy Nadolny Poustochkine’s humorous fable is set in the year 2048. Vietnam is under water and Vietnamese people must travel to Mars. “It is clear that all of our futuristic musings have their roots in the reality of the past and the present. For example, the journeys to Mars in Mars in the Well were reactions against the New Economic Zones program of Vietnam’s government from the 70s to 90s, where parts of Central Highlands and other remote provinces in Vietnam came under more direct political control and were exploited for profits. The conquering of Mars here might be interpreted as a forced implementation of a delusional utopian politics, and the combination of these false politics ideal and the soon-to-be-flooded reality of Vietnam is as contradictory as it is ironic.” Truong Minh Quý interviewed by Graiwoot Chulphongsathorn, Antennae summer 2021.
